2015 MacBook Air Won't Shut Down

My 2015 MacBook Air (OS 10.12.6) won’t shut down or log off from the command in the Apple menu. With all applications quit selecting Shut Down just cleans off the Finder window leaving the installed desk top picture. However, the Dock can be revealed as usual by moving the cursor to the dock edge, and any application can be launched. I have to resort to force shut down each time which I don’t suppose is the recommended way. This problem has only appeared recently. I have the most recent OS update. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I read that resetting the SMC may help. Well, it did. Great.
Over the years I have tried all those resetting strategies to fix problems, but this is the first time it has worked.
