Mail and iMessage

I cannot for the life of me work out why, on my iPad Air2 (and nowhere else in iOS or MacOS) Mail defaults to opening the last received email receipt from Apple (which is now in late December, so you can imagine how annoying it is to have to scroll through many emails to get to the latest) So, in mail on my iPhone, my Macs and my iPad mini, the default is the last received. Not on the Air2.

Additionally, in iMessage with only one friend, his messages appear as if they were posted before the one he is responding to. Again, this only happens on the Air2. All other devices and computers show messages coming in order.

I have no ideas why either of these things might happen, nor what to do about them. Any help would be appreciated

Remove iCloud from Settings and add it again?

Thanks, tried it, now to see what happens. Fingers crossed.
