As it turns out, you don’t need Apple’s assistance with unlocking iPhones when someone simply gives you the passcode. The iPhone 5S running iOS 7 involved in an on-going drug deal investigation in New York was unlocked on Friday after the passcode was provided to the authorities, with the US Government no longer requires Apple’s assistance in the matter. Ars Technica reports it was the original owner who supplied the passcode.
The New York Times says Apple’s iBookstore and iTunes Movies has been shut down in China, following the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television demanding a shutdown of the services. The shutdown couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the iBookstore and iTunes Movies had launched just six months prior — and according to the Times, sales of Apple devices in China needed those services to be online.
A new hire for Apple’s car project is former Senior CNC Programmer R&D Hardware Prototyping and former Tesla employee David Masiukiewicz, who says “Apple provided him with many compelling reasons to come work for them”. The other is a former CNC Machine Shop supervisor from Andretti Autosport Kevin Harvey, and if you put two and two together, it becomes obvious Apple are are in the stage of prototyping individual parts.
For once analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s predictions are about iPhone shipments rather than feature rumours, but he’s the bearer of bad news. His outlook remains decidedly bleak, with his estimates putting Apple falling short of the 210 to 230 million unit mark in 2016. It may be the first year that Apple has a reduction in growth for the iPhone.
Another analyst claims we’ll be seeing a minor update to the iPhone this year, with the 2017 iPhone the one to pull out all the stops and upgrade everything at once. If we’re imagining the upgrades, then Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz says we’ll see OLED displays, wireless charging, and no more home button.
Apple has announced it will be ending support for the original watchOS SDK, with all Apple Watch apps required to use the native SDK from July 1st. I’m guessing there’s going to be a watchOS announcement at WWDC this year that will back this up, somehow.
