The new Apple TV

Meanwhile, iMore says the larger capacity will be used for caching content that you stream. More storage capacity = less re-downloading, hopefully.

Meh. Anything that I stream Iā€™m unlikely to watch again, and if I do, I just stream it again. I never get close to my 500gb allowance.

Realistically aside from ultra slow internet connections how useful will that be?

Movies and TV shows people tend to be a watch once every now and then thing, and because itā€™s only 1080p, in reality theyā€™re not all that big (compared to 4K).
Apps have a download limit of 200MB, the framework for additional content should keep downloads to a minimum. Take games for example, itā€™s a lot more granular than just additional levels. The way how I understand it works is if you download all the resources for level 1 for a game and levels 1-3 are in an outdoor battlefield, it already has the textures available for levels 2-3, only needs to download any additional content and construct the levels from the resources it already has cached.

I understand why the additional storage is there (I always go the max available capacity for my iPhones/iPads), but itā€™s a bit un-Apple to cater for slow internet speeds and build in the ability to cache more content.

I know Iā€™m thinking about this extremely linearly and inside the box, but Iā€™m still unsure of what capacity Iā€™m supposed to by and how Iā€™m supposed to figure that out (and determining peopleā€™s technology needs and trying to sell them that is part of my job!).

And yes I know Iā€™m overthinking this but thatā€™s also part of my job.

What time tomorrow will the appletv be on sale online?

And iPad pro is later now isnā€™t it?

I would assume whenever it is Monday in the US. They never said boo about when itā€™s available here.

November for the iPad Pro.

Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™ll preorder the ATV wait for it. Iā€™m not crazy desperate for it.

4 pm tomorrow then.

I tell myself this every.single.time. But it never sticks.

If you are planning to preorder do AppleTalk a favour and access the Apple Store via their affiliate link

Wouldnā€™t an airport express suit you better then?

Iā€™ll just leave this here :joy:

This makes quite a bit of sense.

As to which one to buy, this article suggests thereā€™s no persistent storage onboard for media, but only for apps (and, indeed, often only components of apps), so 32Gb should be more than enough. (Ok, store this away, and quote me later  )

Then my question is, why does the 64gb exist?

Maybe for gamers? I imagine although they limit games to 200mb at a time or something, that given enough time the entire game will install on the ATV. Some of the games Iā€™ve seen on iOS span gigabytes. Thatā€™s my guess.

Edit: To clarify, I donā€™t think that articles understanding is correct. Maybe new games written to take advantage will allow for cache deletion and the like, but existing gamesā€¦well I donā€™t see them being rewritten just for this feature. Time will tell.

As Iā€™ve already posted (and Iā€™m not typing it out again) app thinning capabilities should take care of that.

There are no existing games either. Theyā€™re all new at this stage.

Apple PR confirmed to me last Wednesday that the launch this week does include Australia. I asked the price but they didnā€™t know.

I have my doubts because existing established games that get ported probably canā€™t take advantage of that without breaking their games

Phew :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I donā€™t see it being an issue. I think developers are expected and would expect it to have it working from day one. And even still, thatā€™s a very small subset of early games that would be effected. (And finally, Appleā€™s not going to add an extra storage tier because some devs wonā€™t be ready for app thinning on day one. This is Apple weā€™re talking about.)
