I have just updated my 2 year old MacBook Air to Catalina, my problem is I can’t shut it down without forcing it and it has also become incredibly slow, Can some one help?

Patience. It may not be finished doing all the reconfig and installation. Give it a few hours to sort itself out. Forcing a shutdown if installation is still happening may cause serious problems.
