Thursday Morning News

The second coming of Apple Pay in Australia is thanks to ANZ, who now support Apple’s mobile payments for ANZ-issued Visa and American Express cards. People have already been able to add their ANZ-issued cards to the Wallet app on the iPhone, and Apple’s Apple Pay site has also been updated with the news, which also notes MasterCard support is coming soon. ANZ marks the first of the big four banks to offer Apple Pay in Australia, and Reuters reports Apple is continuing discussions with CBA, NAB, and Westpac.

By all accounts, Apple’s second quarter financial results were bad. But just how bad can $10.5 billion in profit be, anyway? In this case, maybe it’s only bad when put into context: Six Colours explains that it was Apple’s 10th most profitable quarter of all time, and third most profitable second quarter of all time. That said, it’s kind of hard to ignore how big of a year 2015 was for Apple, at least financially.

The numbers from Apple’s financial results yesterday paint a slightly more positive picture, provided you ignore the year-on-year figures buoyed by an incredible 2015 and the launch of the iPhone 6. App Store revenue is up 35%, Apple Pay is on the up-and-up, and more Android users are switching than ever before. Apple even has 13 million Apple Music subscribers, up from the 11 million it had in February.

IMore has the full transcript of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments from yesterday’s conference call.

Also from Six Colours is some insight into Apple Music, which Cook claims is Apple’s first subscription service. Which is kind of weird, as there have certainly been other subscription services from Apple in the past.

Design drawings of the iPhone 7 Plus look identical to the iPhone 6 Plus, echoing rumours which claim the next iPhone won’t look or feel that much different than the current iPhone design.

Apple has released the third beta of iOS 9.3.2 to developers as well as members of its public beta testing program. Similar third betas of the respective tvOS and OS X El Capitan releases are also available from Apple.

A story about a dead body discovered at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino is cause for concern, with some outlets reporting it as a suicide in a conference room based on the original dispatch call.

The latest in the FBI versus Apple is that the US Government claims what it purchased was a way to access the contents of a device involved in the San Berndino shootings, not a technical understanding of how the exploit worked. Despite processes in place for disclosing vulnerabilities, the FBI is now claiming that they have nothing to disclose to Apple.

It’s kind of strange Apple doesn’t offer an app to control your HomeKit devices, but Home is one app that manages your HomeKit devices from a central spot. The latest update to Home brings 3D Touch shortcuts and design improvements to the app.
