Porn Rampant on YouTube

G’day,

I’ve had an account with, and published videos on YouTube “almost” since it started. I’ve seen it grow and grow over the years, with things like content filters trying to show copyright owners that the site is serious about protecting content (yet of course totally failing), but what I’d not really noticed until now was just how much porn is on the site!

I guess this may not surprise some, and from a bit of Googling, I see that a lot of people actually use YouTube as a great source of free porn viewing… But to me, this was quite shocking - especially from the perspective of an adult with children.

Of course, kids and internet enabled devices must be monitored closely, because incredibly horribly nasty stuff (be it porn, or other graphic content) is but a mouse click away on the fabulous interconnected web we have been building over the past few decades. But, for some reason, whilst I’m well aware of videos on YouTube being “Not Suitable For Children” due to swearing/etc and otherwise hateful/negative natures, I did not expect there to be bucket loads of porn at my son’s fingertips when he may be looking for the latest Stampycat vid.

This came to a head today when I put in a search term - “Heinz Beans Banned” - to find an ad my wife was rabbiting on about. The results that the search found included 1 video of a very sexually graphic nature. Going back now to the site, and just a few basic searches have shown tonnes more graphic videos, and as mentioned, if you google the subject, there’s a lot more people saying “How do I find free porn on YouTube”, rather than “How come YouTube is drowning in filth”?

(Ok, look, don’t get me wrong… I’m not one of those “Wont somebody think of the children!?” types… But if YouTube spent half the time it does on “content filters” on instead building a sex-filter, I don’t think this would be such a problem.)

The end result is… Holy shit, you really can’t just let your child use the internet without watching them like a hawk!

Cheers

We have three kids and you really do need to watch them like a… well us :stuck_out_tongue:

The amount of weird and wonderful stuff found by on youtube by following the “related videos” one after another can lead into very strange places. We got to a point where we removed youtube (and Safari) from the kids iPads so they can really only use what we let them… although the 11 year old not has a PC for games and we have to watch him extra close (although he’s pretty good).

YouTube Kids (for iOS) is a new thing we have found which seems to be OK for the kids, although we have to keep telling my youngest to turn the damn thing off as he tends to just leave it running and walk away for hours on end… in fact this month he’s managed to rack up nearly 100GB in bandwidth! (luckily we are on unlimited cable so it’s not a cost problem, but still a concern).

I just searched for that same term and didn’t get any videos like that in my results. Is it possible you or someone else using your account has already been searching for sexy stuff? Youtube does the “we know what you watch” thing in that creepy uncle kind of way that Google does so well.

I did the same :stuck_out_tongue:The closest I got was a girl “getting the sauce out of the bottle”
(another banned commercial)

In the name of science I did the same to see if I could reproduce the results as stated in the OP, and I also found nothing that would be considered sexually explicit, at least not in the video thumbnails.

I’ve never encountered this issue on YouTube. In fact I’ve always found them to be very proactive at keeping the content above board.

I see the vid is gone too… I did report it, so maybe they removed it…

Youtube is generally pretty good at censoring anything not work safe as 18+ and I’ve never run across porn directly on youtube. Are you sure your kids aren’t on Red Tube?

Lol, no, not Redtube…

Go to YouTube and search

Girl naked

Not safe for work!

I realise if my kid searches for those words, it’s no accident… But if it’s there, other words could trigger it too…

To be honest, it’s been years since I’ve tried to search for anything like that on Youtube. I’m actually surprised. I guess you just have to be super vigilant in all regards as a parent.

This may have had some kind of impact - not so much in terms of someone searching for “it”, but just the history in general, coming together to bring up certain results…

I’ve just gone in and cleared out my YouTube search cache… will be interesting to see what impact that has.

I decided to test this in a private window in Safari. I searched for basic terms which would yield the results you’re concerned about. Yes, the first results (for both genders) showed nudity, but the videos’ descriptions/titles/thumbnails (I didn’t actually watch them) suggested more educational/scientific/artistic subject matter.

The age restriction block is present when you actually go to open the video, but I’d think with thumbnails that have explicit nudity, they would be blurred/blocked in some way?

YMMV of course.
