While I was a bit bored the other night, looking for something interesting to watch, I stumbled on a YouTube video about strategies in Monopoly. I thought, Really!?! I haven’t played Monopoly for years & I watched a couple of other videos on the same subject. Anyway, I have the old MacSoft version of Monopoly on my old G4 so I fired it up last night and had a play. And it seemed to work, at least for one game. Apparently the player who goes first always has an advantage as the next player does over the following & so on. I was bit surprised what hard bargainers the computer players were on the easiest level. Anyway, it seemed to work - I won. It was interesting that what some of these Youtubers were saying was quite incorrect when tested by a guy who did millions of game simulations although their basic ideas seemed quite intuitive. I reminds me of how people have different systems for winning casino games when, mathematically, it is just pure luck. Like the pokies. Blackjack is the only game where you can use a strategy to reduce the casino’s advantage (or if you are very, very good put the advantage slightly in your favour. However, in the last 10 years or so, casinos have been changing the rules to put the advantage back in their favour. There are some states in the US now (not Nevada) where it is illegal for casinos to stop players who are card counting.
